RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels down to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
