A recent study indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
