Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors are granted the ability to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, following the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
